Manual J

ACCA Manual J is the room-by-room heating and cooling load calculation method used to size HVAC equipment for a real house instead of guessing from square footage or the old unit’s tonnage sticker.

Pittsburgh note

In Greater Pittsburgh’s older housing stock, Manual J matters because additions, brick walls, and finished attics defeat square-footage rules of thumb.

Why homeowners should ask for it

Without a load calc, contractors guess tonnage. Guessing creates short-cycling, humidity problems, and uneven rooms — especially in multi-story Pittsburgh homes where the coldest bedroom is rarely the average room.

What to look for in the deliverable

Design temperatures, assumptions about insulation and windows, and heating/cooling BTU results by area. A model number alone is not Manual J, and “same size as before” is not a calculation.

How it connects to install quality

Correct capacity still fails in starved ducts. Pair Manual J with airflow and commissioning checks so the equipment you buy can actually deliver the comfort the load report promised.
