Balance point

The outdoor temperature where a heat pump’s output matches the home’s heat loss; below it, supplemental heat, dual-fuel switchover, or another backup strategy is needed to keep design-day comfort.

Pittsburgh note

Pittsburgh homeowners should ask where the balance or switchover point is set on dual-fuel systems and why — especially for homes with weak ducts or exposed upper floors.

Why the number is house-specific

Envelope, ducts, and equipment capacity all move the balance point. Two neighbors can need different switchover strategies even with similar square footage.

How to use it in a quote review

If a heat-pump or dual-fuel proposal cannot explain winter capacity and backup behavior, the efficiency story is incomplete for Greater Pittsburgh weather.
