Dual fuel (hybrid heating)

A dual-fuel system pairs an electric heat pump with a gas furnace and switches between them based on outdoor temperature, cost, or capacity needs so the home can use heat-pump efficiency without abandoning strong design-day gas heat.

Pittsburgh note

Popular in gas-served Pittsburgh suburbs because it preserves strong design-day heat while capturing heat-pump efficiency in milder weather.

Controls matter as much as equipment

A hybrid only behaves well when switchover logic is intentional. Ask where the balance or switchover point is set, who adjusts it, and what happens on the coldest nights.

Infrastructure checklist

Dual fuel still needs honest answers on duct condition, electrical capacity for the heat pump, and whether the existing furnace cabinet is worth keeping as backup.
